Auth.js, formerly NextAuth.js, is an open-source authentication library for JavaScript web frameworks, originally created by Iain Collins in 2016 and later expanded into a framework-agnostic standard under lead maintainer Balázs Orbán, becoming one of the most widely adopted authentication solutions in the JavaScript ecosystem. In September 2025 the project joined Better Auth, which now stewards its maintenance while recommending Better Auth for greenfield projects.
