Obsidian is a personal knowledge management and note-taking application built by co-founders Shida Li and Erica Xu, who met at the University of Waterloo and launched the app in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. It stores notes as local Markdown files in a user-owned vault rather than a proprietary cloud format, an approach the company markets as durable and free of vendor lock-in. Obsidian is self-funded by user revenue rather than venture capital, and by 2023 had grown to roughly a million users with an active third-party plugin ecosystem.
