Obsidian is a Markdown-based personal knowledge management and note-taking application founded by Shida Li and Erica Xu, who previously built the outliner app Dynalist together; Obsidian entered public beta in March 2020, and Steph Ango has served as CEO since 2023. The core app is proprietary, but the obsidianmd GitHub organization is the hub for its open ecosystem, hosting the community plugin/theme registry, official API type definitions, and tools like the Web Clipper.
