The OBS Project is a volunteer-led open-source collective founded in September 2012 by developer Hugh "Jim" Bailey, who built the original tool to stream StarCraft games and released it publicly under the GPL-2.0 license. Community contributions transformed it into the dominant cross-platform broadcasting suite for live-streamers on Twitch, YouTube, and other major platforms, sustained entirely through open donations rather than a commercial backer.
