OpenMetadata is an open-source, unified metadata platform for data discovery, lineage, governance, and data/AI context, positioned as "the open context layer for data and AI" with connectors, APIs, and an MCP server for teams and AI agents. It was created by Suresh Srinivas, a co-creator of Apache Hadoop and co-founder of Hortonworks, and Sriharsha Chintalapani, a former Uber and Hortonworks architect; the two went on to found Collate, the commercial company built on top of OpenMetadata.
