Polar (polar.sh) is an open-source billing and payments platform that acts as Merchant of Record for developers, handling subscriptions, usage-based billing, and global tax compliance for AI-era software businesses. Founded by Birk Jernström, formerly a director of product at Shopify who previously co-founded Tictail (acquired by Shopify in 2018), and launched publicly in September 2024. The company raised a $10M seed round led by Accel, with angel backing from founders at Shopify, Vercel, Supabase, Raycast, and Resend, and its core codebase is released under Apache 2.0.
