Prometheus is an open-source systems monitoring and alerting toolkit originally built at SoundCloud in 2012 by engineers including Matt T. Proud and Julius Volz to handle metrics for containerized infrastructure that older tools like StatsD and Graphite couldn't meet. It pioneered a multi-dimensional, pull-based time-series data model and its own query language (PromQL), drawing inspiration from Google's internal Borgmon system. Prometheus joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation in 2016 as its second hosted project and became the second project (after Kubernetes) to reach full CNCF graduation, in August 2018.
