Ruby on Rails ("rails" on GitHub) is the open-source, MIT-licensed web application framework created by David Heinemeier Hansson in 2004 while building Basecamp at the company then known as 37signals. It popularized convention-over-configuration and MVC patterns for rapid web development, first released in 2004 with a 1.0 launch in December 2005, and has since been used to build sites including GitHub, Airbnb, Shopify, and Twitch. In 2022, eight companies including GitHub, Shopify, and 37signals endowed the nonprofit Rails Foundation, chaired by Hansson, to fund the framework's documentation, education, and community.
