The Open Network (TON) is a decentralized layer-1 blockchain designed for high transaction throughput and deep integration with the Telegram messaging platform. It originated in 2018 as the Telegram Open Network, built by Telegram co-founders Pavel and Nikolai Durov; after a 2020 SEC dispute over its token sale led Telegram to withdraw, independent developers and the community-run TON Foundation took the codebase forward as "The Open Network." Telegram reengaged with TON in 2023 as its designated Web3 infrastructure partner, integrating TON-based wallets into its app, and in 2026 took on a larger operational role in the network.
