Weaviate is the company behind the open-source AI-native vector database of the same name, founded in Amsterdam in 2019 by Bob van Luijt and Etienne Dilocker (formerly operating as SeMI Technologies). It builds infrastructure that stores and searches embedding vectors alongside structured data, letting developers build semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation, and AI agent applications at production scale. The company, headquartered in Amsterdam with additional offices in the US and Australia, raised a $50 million Series B in 2023 led by Index Ventures, and its open-source database has been downloaded more than 20 million times.
