GitHub is a code-hosting and collaborative-development platform offering Git-based version control, issue tracking, pull requests, CI/CD through Actions, and a package registry. It was co-founded in 2008 by Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, P. J. Hyett, and Scott Chacon, and grew into the world's largest host of Git repositories. Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018 for $7.5 billion; it now operates as a wholly owned Microsoft subsidiary serving more than 150 million developers.
