The x402 Foundation stewards x402, an open payments protocol built on the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code that lets applications, APIs, and AI agents send and receive instant stablecoin payments over ordinary HTTP requests. The protocol originated with Coinbase and Cloudflare in 2025 and was formally established as a Linux Foundation project in April 2026, backed by organizations including AWS, Google, Microsoft, Shopify, Stripe, and Visa. It charges no protocol fees and has processed well over a hundred million transactions across networks including Base and Solana.
