yt-dlp is an open-source community project that emerged in October 2020 as a fork of youtube-dl and youtube-dlc, born partly in response to the RIAA's DMCA takedown of the original youtube-dl repository on GitHub. Governed by a distributed team of maintainers, it became the dominant successor to youtube-dl — now shipped as the default in major Linux distributions including Debian and Ubuntu — and logs over 12 million PyPI downloads per month.
