Zulip is an open-source team chat application distinguished by its topic-based threading model, which organizes conversations into named topics within channels rather than a flat message stream. It originated within Kandra Labs, the San Francisco company Tim Abbott founded in 2016 to steward and sustain its development, and has grown into one of the largest open-source team chat projects with over a thousand contributors. In 2026 stewardship passed to the nonprofit Zulip Foundation, with Kandra Labs continuing as the primary development team.
