Context
OpenRouter, a service that gives developers access to many AI models through one API, announced two input options for apps: WAV or MP3 audio, and links to PDFs. Sending a link to a public PDF means the app no longer has to encode the file (base64) itself before submitting it. Announcement.
The two inputs have different reach. The announcement says PDF URLs work with any model on OpenRouter, and the documentation explains how: if the chosen model can read files natively the PDF is passed to it, and otherwise OpenRouter parses the PDF and passes the parsed result. Local or private documents still need encoded file data. Audio instead depends on choosing a model that accepts audio input, so broad PDF support says nothing about audio. PDF documentation.
