Context
models send different text units to different specialist networks, creating uneven workloads across GPUs. NVIDIA addresses that problem in its JAX training stack by grouping variable-sized matrix calculations and improving how data moves between devices. This lets each specialist process its assigned work without forcing every specialist into the same padded workload. The engineering article explains the computation and communication changes.
For DeepSeek-V3 training on GB200 hardware, NVIDIA reports a 10.4-fold throughput improvement over its unoptimized baseline. That result combines several changes across the training stack. It demonstrates how much that baseline lost to inefficient execution and communication, rather than measuring a universal speedup for every mixture-of-experts model.
- mixture-of-experts — A model built from many specialist sub-networks where only a few activate per token, giving big-model capability at small-model running cost.
- transformer — The neural network architecture behind modern AI models, built on attention — letting every word directly consider every other word in parallel.
