Text To Speech Api Integration

Context

When adding generated speech to an app, whether the text is already complete helps determine the connection to use. ElevenLabs recommends HTTP for known text: the app sends the text and receives audio progressively, so playback can begin before the full clip is ready. When a is still composing its reply, a WebSocket keeps a connection open so text can arrive incrementally and audio can return along the way. Its integration guide explains these choices.

The model also determines which connection is compatible. The documented text-to-speech WebSocket endpoint excludes Eleven v3 and v4; those models use a separate text-to-dialogue WebSocket interface. Developers therefore need to select the model and interface together. The API documentation identifies this boundary.

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • streaming — Sending a model's response token by token as it is generated, so the reader sees text immediately instead of waiting for the whole answer.
  • LLM — A large language model — the neural network behind tools like Claude and ChatGPT, trained on huge amounts of text to predict what comes next.
  • chunking — Splitting documents into passages small enough to embed and retrieve individually — the step that quietly determines whether retrieval works at all.
