About
Sommelier is an Excel add-in paired with a relay server that lets an AI coding agent (the author tested pi, opencode, and codex) work directly inside a live spreadsheet alongside the user. It targets users who don't want to use Microsoft Copilot, who prefer a local model for security reasons, or whose agent already has access to sensitive personal data; it isn't published to the Microsoft add-in marketplace but can be sideloaded.
At a glance
Sommelier connects an Excel workbook to an agent you already run so it can read cells and propose changes. It is worth evaluating if you want help inside Excel and prefer to choose the agent handling the request.
Good fit
Excel users who can sideload an add-in and inspect proposed edits before approving them.
Consider something else when
Use a manual workflow if your organization disallows sideloading or sending workbook content to the configured provider.
Start here
Pair a scratch workbook containing fictional data. Ask for a simple chart or formula change and check the proposal before approving it.
Cost and requirements
The publisher lists a free open-source add-in, Node.js 22.12 or newer and a shell-capable agent. The setup prompt includes a private connection key.
Limits to know
The publisher describes encryption between Excel and the local bridge. The agent still controls what it sends to its model provider.

Why it made the leaderboard
Gives agent harnesses outside Microsoft Copilot direct pair-programming access to a live Excel session instead of only file-based import and export.
