Audio Transcription With Timestamps

Context

Word-level timestamps turn a transcript into an index of the recording. ElevenLabs' Scribe explanation describes that associates recognized words with start and end times and speaker labels. An application can use a text match to locate the corresponding audio or highlight a caption as the word is spoken.

Separate event labels can represent sounds such as laughter and applause. That lets an editor search for audience reactions as well as spoken phrases. The useful change is that the output preserves timing and event structure in a form software can directly process.

Key takeaways · AI-distilled
  • ElevenLabs' Scribe returns an array of typed as word, spacing or audio_event, each with start and end times, so timestamps come from one API call instead of a second forced- pass.
  • ElevenLabs argues forced alignment adds infrastructure, latency and failure points, and can drift or fail on rapid speech or speech buried in background noise.
  • With tag_audio_events enabled, laughter, applause and ambient sounds are timestamped as separate events rather than forced into hallucinated speech, so analytics can filter them out or search for them.
  • For multichannel audio, Scribe transcribes up to five channels independently and maps them deterministically, channel 0 to speaker_0 and so on, which ElevenLabs says is more reliable than acoustic diarization.
  • Spacing tokens make pauses measurable, such as how long a support was silent on a call, but are omitted for languages without word spaces such as Japanese, Mandarin and Thai.
Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • structured output — Forcing a model's response to match a schema, so downstream code can parse it instead of guessing at prose.
  • token — The chunk of text a model reads and writes in — roughly three-quarters of a word — and the unit AI usage is billed in.
  • alignment — The work of making AI systems actually pursue what their builders and users intend, rather than something subtly or dangerously different.
  • AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
