Context

Qwen, Alibaba's AI lab, says its newest image model, Qwen-Image-2.1, is now the top open-source entry on Arena's blind-vote leaderboards for both text-to-image generation and image editing. Arena, the crowdsourced ranking site that pits models against each other in anonymous human votes, independently lists Qwen-Image-2.1 at #16 overall on its Image Edit board and #17 overall on Text-to-Image, ahead of every other model but still behind the closed frontier leaders. Qwen-Image-2.1 is released under a research license rather than a fully open license, so open-source here means the weights are downloadable and inspectable, not that commercial reuse is unrestricted.
