Claude Cowork and Chat Merge Into One Assistant

Claude users will no longer choose between chat and Cowork before starting a task. Claude's announcement says the two are merging into one Claude. A user can ask a quick question or hand over a report, and Claude carries on even after the laptop is closed, asking when something is unclear while the user keeps the final say. The post says the change is rolling out to Pro and Max over the next few weeks.

The launch video, read from an automatic transcript of its audio, explains why. Cowork is described as the place where Anthropic worked out how Claude should take on bigger, multi-step work. Claude got good enough at judging what a task needs that keeping that capability in a separate place stopped making sense. In the merged version, one conversation brings in whatever the task requires, whether that is an answer or a deck drafted from last week's numbers. The narration says existing chats, tasks, skills and memories stay intact, and that the user can still keep, edit or steer any piece of the result. It calls this a first step.
