Anthropic's Boris Cherny Signals Claude Chat and Cowork Are Merging

Anthropic is folding Cowork, its product for handing Claude multi-step jobs that end in finished files, into ordinary Claude chat, so users no longer have to pick a mode before they start. Boris Cherny, who created Claude Code at Anthropic, framed the change in his post: Claude Code let developers hand Claude a feature and come back to shipped code, Cowork did the same for knowledge workers with a brief and finished files, and now chat and Cowork start merging into one Claude that carries context across everything a user is working on. Anthropic's announcement video describes how that works in practice: it is all one conversation, Claude brings in whatever the task needs, and a quick question or a request to turn last week's numbers into a deck goes to the same place. The video says existing chats, tasks, skills and memories stay intact. Part of the groundwork was already in place, since chat and Cowork have shared one editable memory since late August.

The change arrives gradually. Cherny says Anthropic is rolling it out slowly and will tune it for speed and reliability along the way, and Anthropic's announcement, as quoted by Simon Willison on his blog, says it reaches Pro and Max plans first, in the Claude app on web, desktop and mobile, over the coming weeks. Cherny's judgment that the merged version feels simpler, faster and more powerful comes from weeks of daily use as part of the team building it, not from an outside test. Willison called the merger hopefully good news for anyone confused by Cowork, Claude and Claude Code, himself included, but expects that working out what the merger means for specific features and surfaces will take quite a bit of work.
