Context
Anthropic's Model Hardware Standard gives AI agents a common way to discover and operate programmable laboratory equipment. Its drivers expose basic commands and describe each device's capabilities, physical characteristics and configured safety limits. That supplies information otherwise scattered across incompatible interfaces and equipment manuals. The August 2026 research preview targets laboratories and advanced manufacturers.
The can coordinate instruments and turn a learned sequence into a script, allowing repeated operations to run without fresh reasoning at every step. This offers researchers a way to reuse experimental workflows across connected equipment. Safety remains part of the preview's development.
- AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
- eval — A repeatable test for AI quality — a set of tasks plus scoring — used the way software teams use test suites, because model output is too variable to judge by eyeballing.
- MCP — The Model Context Protocol — an open standard that lets any AI assistant plug into any tool or data source without custom integration code.
