Kilo Code manages the coding session, while OpenRouter can supply the models and routing behind it. Connecting an OpenRouter account lets a developer keep Kilo's editing workflow while using that account's provider choices and billing. The integration guide also distinguishes two free-model paths: OpenRouter's free models use OpenRouter's account limits, whereas Kilo's own free option runs through Kilo Gateway. Selecting a model therefore determines which service's credits and routing rules apply, even when the coding interface looks the same.
