Context

, a protocol that connects AI applications to tools, changed how servers handle requests in its July 28, 2026 specification. Each request now carries the information needed to process it, including client capabilities and protocol version. The official release explains that requests can consequently reach different server instances without maintaining a shared protocol session.

Ongoing work can still be remembered: a tool can issue an explicit handle that the model passes back as an argument. The change moves that state out of the connection itself, simplifying how services distribute traffic. This simpler request model also underpins the stateless MCP explorer that Simon Willison describes building.
