Context
Ethan Mollick proposes designing AI agents to recognize when people should participate in their work. In Agency and Agents, he describes a facilitator , an idea he developed with Lilach Mollick, whose job is to decide when to seek human involvement while other agents carry out tasks.
Permission is one reason to involve someone, but the proposal also protects opportunities to contribute expertise, different ideas, and judgment. Mollick argues that handing every interesting decision to AI would leave people with exceptions and failures while reducing their opportunities to develop . The proposed organization makes human participation an explicit design goal, rather than relying on people to notice when intervention is needed.
