Context

StepFun launched Step Plan, a subscription covering Step 3.5 Flash, its coding and model, on the StepFun Open Platform. It spans four tiers from $6.99 to $99 per month, and StepFun says it plugs into existing tools such as Cursor, Windsurf and Cline without vendor lock-in, meaning the same editor integrations work whether or not a developer is on the subscription.

A follow-up post said paid traffic, meaning Step Plan subscribers and OpenRouter's paid API tier, would move to a dedicated lane running above 100 per second, while free-tier response speed was left unchanged. Both the tier pricing and the speed figures come directly from StepFun's own announcements, with no independent measurement of the paid-lane throughput cited here.

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • open weights — A model whose trained parameters are published for anyone to download and run — unlike API-only models you can access but never possess.
  • AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
  • token — The chunk of text a model reads and writes in — roughly three-quarters of a word — and the unit AI usage is billed in.
