This is a single anecdote, published by OpenAIDevs, about OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra working out how to control a robot arm. In the video, the operator of a shared robotics lab in San Francisco says the instruction amounted to telling the model the robot was over there and to SSH into it and see whether it could control it.
By the speaker's account, Astra worked out the controls and the cameras on its own, sent back a camera shot of the speaker standing to the side, which confirmed it was working on the right robot, and then picked up an item, with basically no further instruction. For comparison, the speaker says that at earlier hackathons it took about eight hours from hooking a computer up to the robot to getting Codex interfacing with it, because Codex had to work out what all the controls were.
The speaker also says the Astra run still took a long time, and the transcript gives no duration, so it does not show that Astra was faster than the earlier eight-hour efforts. What it supports is narrower: in this one session the model worked out a robot's controls over a remote shell without step-by-step guidance, which the speaker treats as a sign that frontier models are ready to take on the low-level setup work that usually stands between people and a robot. It is a promotional account rather than a measured test, and the quotes here come from an automatic transcript.
