OpenRouter Classifiers, a beta feature described in a July 2026 announcement, turns AI requests into categories that teams can use to understand spending. Administrators define labels, such as task type or department, and select a model to assign them. The resulting tags let teams group usage and costs by the work being performed.
Classification runs after the original request completes, making it a reporting step outside the response path. It is itself a billed model operation, so teams can classify only a sample of traffic to control overhead. This trades comprehensive labeling for lower monitoring cost.
