Context
Anthropic developed a monitoring system to distinguish concerning nuclear-weapons queries from legitimate nuclear discussions. Its August 2025 announcement describes cooperation with the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration and Department of Energy national laboratories. The system is a classifier, meaning an AI system that automatically labels conversations, so it can flag potential misuse rather than treating every nuclear topic as suspicious.
The technical account says government specialists supplied a curated set of nuclear risk indicators and that the classifier was validated on synthetic test prompts. The 96% accuracy figure comes from that preliminary testing, not from real conversations. Anthropic then deployed the classifier on a percentage of Claude traffic, where it incorrectly flagged some harmless conversations about current events. Anthropic says reviewing flagged conversations together supplied that resolved those cases, which suggests specialist screening works better with contextual review.
