Context

Generating several answers can improve a ’s response without retraining it, but choosing the winner matters. A Cohere research abstract reports that answer-selection methods effective in English often failed to transfer across languages. The researchers adapted both the variety of generated candidates and the method used to select among them. Their abstract reports a nine-point improvement in Command-A’s win rate on the multilingual m-ArenaHard-v2.0 when selecting from five candidates, compared with generating one answer. This supports testing generation and selection together in the target language, rather than assuming that an English-tuned selection method will make extra computation useful everywhere.

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • LLM — A large language model — the neural network behind tools like Claude and ChatGPT, trained on huge amounts of text to predict what comes next.
  • benchmark — A standard public test set for comparing AI models — the shared scoreboards behind every "model X beats model Y" claim.
  • inference — Running a trained model to get answers — the phase where AI is actually used, as opposed to trained.
