Telegram is a cloud-based messaging platform founded in 2013 by brothers Pavel and Nikolai Durov, who had previously co-founded VKontakte (VK), Russia's dominant social network, before leaving the country following a government-pressured ownership dispute. Nikolai designed Telegram's MTProto encryption protocol; the platform's open API and open-source clients set it apart from proprietary alternatives, and it now serves over one billion monthly active users worldwide, with headquarters in Dubai.
