Background

Field left Brown for a Thiel Fellowship and started the company with Wallace. Figma’s retrospective describes an exploratory period before the design product took shape, including attempts to find a use for browser graphics. This history makes the product’s eventual focus clearer: the technology was a starting point, while collaborative design became the job it served. The company’s founder letter marks its public listing in July 2025.[1][3]

Contributions

Field and Wallace started Figma in 2012 after meeting at Brown. The company’s filing describes a fragmented design workflow: teams moved large files between tools and used annotations to explain changes. Bringing the work into a browser created a common place to edit, discuss and share the design. WebGL, a browser graphics interface that uses the computer’s graphics processor, helped make demanding visual editing possible on the web. The contribution belongs to Figma’s founders and engineering team, rather than Field alone writing every part.[2]

Ideas

In his IPO founder letter, Field argues that design remains central as more people can turn an idea into software with AI. The company’s original ambition was to reduce the gap between imagining something and putting it on a screen. His account connects the shared design workspace to a broader product-development process, where designers, engineers and other teammates shape the same outcome. This is a statement of product direction, rather than proof that every new tool achieves that ambition.[1]
