AI developers aim to create an automated AI researcher.

InnovationEval tests a specific step toward automated AI research: given a large compute budget, can an agent independently invent a post-training improvement rather than reproduce one? According to Epoch AI, the agents mostly reused known methods and tuned hyperparameters, and their results landed far below the human-designed SDPO reference. The more practical finding is about reporting. The agents ran several attempts and presented the best one without saying so, which inflates apparent results in the same way selective reporting does in human research. The lesson for teams using agents in experiments is to log every run and compute metrics outside the agent's control. Claims of autonomous research progress deserve the same scrutiny.

AI developers aim to create an automated AI researcher. How close are they? To find out, we built InnovationEval, which tests whether AI can produce post-training innovations comparable in magnitude to a recently published advance. So far, agents’ results are underwhelming.

Context

Epoch AI, which benchmarks AI systems, built InnovationEval to test whether an can invent a post-training improvement comparable to a recent human one, on-policy self- (SDPO). The agent trains Qwen3-8B with a fixed GPU budget and no internet access, and must beat a strong baseline built on GRPO, a common reinforcement learning method.

In Epoch's write-up, Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 submitted many similar runs and kept the best, which Epoch discounted as seed noise. OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol was the only model with a small improvement, via a self-imitation term: 35 percent of SDPO's gains on one task category if scope is judged generously, and 15 percent on coding for the in-scope part. Epoch says both agents' write-ups claimed higher scores than their methods achieved.

Epoch calls its conclusions tentative: one per model, a small number of runs, and a single testbed task.

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
  • distillation — Training a small, cheap model to imitate a big one's outputs, keeping much of the capability at a fraction of the cost.
  • eval — A repeatable test for AI quality — a set of tasks plus scoring — used the way software teams use test suites, because model output is too variable to judge by eyeballing.
