About

Z.ai model family available through hosted model APIs, a restricted Coding Plan and selected downloadable weights. Capabilities, prices and licences vary by release. Current GLM-5.3 is text-only with always-enabled reasoning; the client around the model controls tool execution.

At a glance

GLM is a model family from Z.ai, worth evaluating as a backend for coding assistants or other software that needs generated text and tool calls. Choose the particular model and access route before comparing prices: a hosted token-metered API, the restricted Coding Plan and self-hosted weights have different requirements. The model supplies responses and proposed actions; the application around it still decides which files, commands and services it can access.

Good fit

Developers willing to compare a candidate model on representative work, including whether its output is correct and how much review it requires. Current GLM-5.3 documentation describes a text-only model with a one-million-token context window, streaming, function calling and structured output. Those features can support a coding workflow, but they do not establish that a long input will be understood correctly or that an agent will complete a job. Model choice, tool permissions and the client’s behavior all affect the result.

Consider something else when

You want the model name alone to guarantee a finished coding application, unrestricted subscription usage or compatibility with every existing request. GLM-5.3 keeps reasoning enabled; the documentation says an older request that explicitly disables it will fail. The flagship’s text-only input also differs from multimodal variants and separate vision tools. For a small local experiment, check the serving hardware and release licence before assuming available weights will run like a desktop app.

Start here

Decide whether you are integrating an application through the model API or using an officially supported Coding Plan client. Check the endpoint and protocol available to your actual account before generating a key. For an API evaluation, use one small, non-sensitive example with a known answer, record the exact model ID and reasoning setting, then inspect both the result and metered usage. GLM-5.3 accepts low, high or max reasoning effort, with max documented as the default. This is a proposed test; no prompt, API call, client or local model was run for this source-based review.

Cost and requirements

On 31 October 2026, public API pricing lists GLM-5.3 at $1.40 per million input tokens, $0.26 for cached input and $4.40 for output. Other models have different rates, including some older free variants. Coding Plan marketing starts at $18 per month, with both five-hour and weekly credit limits, supported-client restrictions and shared quotas. The FAQ says exhausted plan usage does not automatically spend the account balance. The subscription renews automatically and is described as non-refundable; cancellation instructions conflict on the required lead time, so confirm the deadline before subscribing.

Limits to know

Coding Plan requests for some older model IDs are automatically routed to newer models, so an old name alone does not establish reproducibility. The flagship page also documents protocol restrictions for accounts that previously subscribed to a plan; do not assume an OpenAI-compatible client makes every endpoint interchangeable. Hosted use sends inputs to the provider. Self-hosting changes that data path but adds hardware and operations work. GLM-5.3 weights carry a custom licence, including a security-review condition for very large model-as-a-service operators; do not transfer another variant’s licence to this release. No coding quality, speed, privacy implementation or serving configuration was independently tested.

Still unclear

  • Which protocols and endpoint are enabled for the intended account, especially after a Coding Plan subscription?
  • The usage policy asks for cancellation at least three days before renewal, while the FAQ says at least twenty-four hours. Confirm the applicable deadline.

Why it made the leaderboard

A candidate backend for coding and agent applications when evaluated on representative tasks. Subscription quotas, supported clients and effective model routing matter as much as the headline token price.
