About
FreshThread is a Windows companion app for Codex that displays live task activity, including available context usage, completed turns, compactions, and handoff readiness. When context runs low, it generates a handoff summary of the goal, constraints, completed work, and next steps that the user reviews and approves before continuing the work in a fresh task.
At a glance
FreshThread tracks Codex sessions and helps carry working context into a fresh task. It is worth evaluating if long sessions repeatedly compact and you need a way to resume without reconstructing the task by hand.
Good fit
Windows users running long Codex tasks who can assess the desktop companion’s local access.
Consider something else when
Use manual handoff notes if you cannot approve an unsigned desktop app or local session monitoring.
Start here
Use a synthetic task and inspect the suggested handoff before opening a new session. Check whether it carries the current objective, evidence and unfinished work without including unrelated context.
Cost and requirements
The project lists free early access for Windows 10 and 11. The Codex integration requires the desktop app.
Limits to know
The maintainer says the Windows installer lacks a publisher signature and separately identifies the open-source bridge. A review of that bridge does not cover the entire desktop app.
