Context

OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol is now a generally available model choice in GitHub Copilot, according to GitHub's changelog notice. It is open to Copilot Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise users through the model picker in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, Eclipse, the Copilot CLI, the Copilot coding , the Copilot app, github.com and GitHub Mobile, with a gradual rollout. Usage is billed at the provider's list price under usage-based billing; OpenAI's own launch post lists API pricing of $2 per million input and $10 per million output tokens. For Business and Enterprise organizations, new models switch on automatically unless an administrator has turned off the global default or disabled this model in the Copilot model policy.

GitHub positions the model for agentic coding and terminal work and says that in early testing it reliably completed tasks using noticeably fewer tokens and steps than earlier GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 models. The notice gives no figures, task set or method for that testing, and the accompanying video adds only a demonstration of the model helping build a retro arcade game. What the announcement establishes is availability, plan coverage, billing and admin controls; the efficiency advantage is GitHub's unquantified report.
