OpenAI recently published data on its researchers’ coding-agent usage. We took their weekly figures from January to mid-August 2026 and fitted trends to summarize how quickly spending grew. We found that spending has been doubling about once a month.

Context

Epoch AI, a research group that tracks AI trends, reports that spending on coding agents by researchers at OpenAI has been doubling about once a month. In its post, Epoch says it took weekly figures that OpenAI published on its researchers' coding- usage, covering January to mid-August 2026, and fitted trends to them.

The doubling time is therefore Epoch's estimate from a fitted curve over about seven months, not a figure OpenAI reported directly. The post text gives no units beyond calling it spending.

Doubling monthly for a full year would multiply spending roughly 4,000-fold (2 to the 12th power), so the rate describes that window and cannot be assumed to continue. It also concerns one organization's researchers, which says little about coding-agent spending elsewhere.
