Kimi resets 25% of K3.1 Pro quota after rate-limit bugs

From the Daily Brief

Days after Kimi K3.1 Pro launched, Moonshot posted an apology for rate limits and unnecessary quota consumption on the K3.1 Pro subscription plan, saying the problems were its own and should have been fixed sooner. The remedy is a one-time reset on every plan that restores 25% of the monthly quota, which Moonshot equates to one week of usage; anyone below 25% usage resets to zero. Moonshot also changed the plan's parameters to cut unnecessary subagent calls and output length. The reset fixes past overcharging, while the parameter change is meant to make each future session draw less from the same allowance. Nathan Lambert's Interconnects podcast this week also discussed the model's mixed reception despite strong benchmark results, which puts the plan's early billing trouble alongside a wider debate over how well the model holds up in use.

We're sorry for the rate limits and unnecessary quota consumption on the K3.1 Pro subscription plan. These were our issues, and we should have fixed them sooner. Today, every subscriber on every plan gets a one-time usage reset, restoring 25% of their monthly quota (usage below 25% resets to zero), equal to one week of usage. Your usage bar will reflect this adjustment by end of day PST. We've also adjusted the plan's parameters and are reducing unnecessary subagent calls and output length, so your quota goes further. Thank you for your patience while we put this right.

Context

Moonshot AI is giving every Kimi subscriber back a week of usage after its K3.1 Pro subscription plan hit rate limits and used up quota it should not have. In the post from its official account, the company calls these its own issues and says it should have fixed them sooner. Subscriptions meter usage against a monthly quota, and the one-time reset restores 25% of that quota, which Kimi equates to one week of use. Subscribers who had used less than 25% go back to zero. As a hypothetical example, someone who had used 60% of the month's allowance would drop to 35%. Kimi says usage bars will show the change by the end of the day, Pacific time, and that the reset applies on every plan.

Kimi also says it changed the plan's parameters and is cutting unnecessary calls and output length so quota lasts longer. Subagents are helper instances an starts to handle parts of a task, and each call and each extra of output draws on the subscriber's allowance, so the fix targets how much the service spends on a user's behalf rather than only the limits themselves. The post does not say what the rate-limit bugs were, how much quota was wasted, or what the new parameters are.

The problems concern the subscription plan for Kimi K3.1 Pro, a model Moonshot launched two days earlier, on October 23. This explanation is based only on the announcement itself; replies and any follow-up posts were not collected.

  • AI agent — An AI system that doesn't just answer once but works toward a goal in a loop — taking actions, reading the results, and deciding what to do next.
  • token — The chunk of text a model reads and writes in — roughly three-quarters of a word — and the unit AI usage is billed in.
