Context

Qwen's expanded Qwen2.5-Coder family gave developers more choices for running a coding model within their hardware limits. The initial release offered 1.5B and 7B models, with 32B still forthcoming. The November 2024 expansion completed a six-size lineup spanning 0.5B to 32B parameters, with base models for further training and instruction-tuned versions for direct interaction.

Size also changed the available : the three smallest variants were listed at 32,000 , while 7B and larger supported 128,000. Licensing differed too. The 3B variant used the Qwen Research license; the other five used Apache 2.0. Choosing a smaller model therefore required checking more than its memory footprint.

Terms in this piece · Glossary
  • context window — The maximum amount of text a model can consider at once — its working memory for the current conversation or task.
  • token — The chunk of text a model reads and writes in — roughly three-quarters of a word — and the unit AI usage is billed in.
Key quotes

“Qwen2.5-Coder-32B-Instruct has become the current SOTA open-source code model, matching the coding capabilities of GPT-4o.”
