GPT-6 Sol and Luna just landed in Astra’s orbit. Both launch today with API prices 50% lower than GPT-5.6. Build with Sol. Scale with Luna. To production and beyond.

Context

OpenAI has launched two GPT-6 API models, Sol and Luna. The OpenAIDevs launch post says they are priced 50% lower than GPT-5.6 and suggests building with Sol and scaling with Luna, which, alongside Luna's much lower prices, casts Luna as the option for high volume. OpenAI's API pricing page shows the halving exactly for Sol. Its standard short- rates are $2.00 per million input and $10.00 per million output tokens, against $4.00 and $20.00 for GPT-5.6 Sol. Tokens are the chunks of text a model reads and writes, and they are what API usage is billed in.

Luna's cut is uneven. Its input price is $0.10 per million tokens, half GPT-5.6 Luna's $0.20, but its output price is $0.50 against $1.20, a cut of nearly 60%. So the post's 50% figure is close to exact for input and understates the output saving. These are prices per token, so the cost of a given job also depends on how many tokens the new models use to complete it. Neither the post nor the pricing page answers that, and OpenAI's launch article returned an error when fetched, so this explanation rests on the post and the pricing table.
