Epoch AI releases ChatGPT usage explorer covering 5,000 users

We’ve collected metadata on the usage patterns of 5,000 ChatGPT users and made it available in our new ChatGPT usage explorer. The histories span Dec 2022–Dec 2025 and show the cohort using ChatGPT more intensively over time. More on this below.

Context

The ChatGPT usage explorer shows how usage intensified within a panel of 5,000 US users of OpenAI's chatbot. Median monthly messages per active participant, counting prompts and replies, increased from 14 in January 2023 to 36 in December 2025.

The sample includes only people who agreed to share their histories and used ChatGPT in 2026. People who stopped earlier are therefore missing, which can push the observed trend upward. The explorer is useful for studying changes within this selected group; it cannot establish how usage evolved among everyone who ever tried ChatGPT.
