About

Native macOS reading workspace for PDF, EPUB and TXT files with highlights, notes and contextual AI. Imports are copied locally, while authenticated cloud preparation can sync original files and searchable text. The README promises account-free reading, but inspected source gates workspace access on a session; the public release is an alpha.

At a glance

Reader combines PDF, EPUB and TXT reading with highlights, notes and book-aware AI in a native Mac workspace. It is worth investigating if switching between a book and a separate chat app interrupts your study, and you can tolerate an alpha’s setup uncertainty. For dependable account-free reading, wait for clearer evidence: the README promises that path, but the inspected app source puts the workspace behind an authenticated session.

Good fit

A technically comfortable Mac reader who wants the book, dictionary, browser and conversation side by side. Imports become managed local copies, while selectable text and annotations can be prepared for contextual questions. Choosing a passage, current page, reading-so-far or whole-book scope is more useful than repeatedly pasting text into a general chat. Answers still need checking against the book; no reading or answer-quality trial was performed for this guide.

Consider something else when

You need a ready-to-use Windows or mobile app, dependable scanned-PDF understanding, or a firm guarantee that books never leave your Mac. The public project is macOS first; iPhone and iPad support is a goal. The backend documentation leaves OCR and image-grounded PDF answers for future work. EPUB uses vertical sections, with pagination and full standards coverage still open.

Start here

For a source evaluation, the documented requirements are macOS 15 and Xcode 16 or later. Open Reader.xcodeproj and the Reader scheme. The checked-in backend address is localhost; the normal app source requires authentication, so establish a working backend/session before expecting library access. Start with a non-sensitive TXT file and check reading, one saved highlight and reopening it before trying AI. The September 20 public alpha is described as not Apple-notarized; it was not downloaded or run here.

Cost and requirements

The repository includes an MIT licence. Operating your own online features adds authentication, database/storage, hosting and model-gateway setup and usage costs; source availability does not make those services free. Public website terms describe more restrictive reuse rights than the repository licence, including compiled redistribution and hosted operation. That disagreement needs clarification before basing a distribution or service on Reader.

Limits to know

An authenticated book-opening path prepares both the original file and searchable text for cloud sync, so highlighting a short passage does not imply that only that passage leaves the device. The privacy policy describes local reading after an available session, cloud retention with account deletion subject to backups/legal requirements, and local data that can remain after uninstalling. Backend failure tolerance and first-launch account-free access are different questions. Source inspection cannot establish the distributed binary’s behaviour or service reliability.

Still unclear

  • The official build’s current AI pricing, usage limits and availability beyond the source project’s self-hosted configuration.
  • Whether a current distributed build offers first-launch account-free reading despite the inspected source’s authentication gate.

Why it made the leaderboard

May suit technically comfortable Mac readers who want books and contextual questions in one workspace. Resolve first-launch authentication and backend setup before relying on account-free reading, and review cloud data handling before importing private materials. The guide records the source and website documentation conflicts.
