Anthropic said on February 27, 2026 that months of negotiations with the US Department of War had reached an impasse over two exceptions it requested to lawful military use of Claude: mass domestic surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons. The statement responded to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth's announcement on X that he was directing the department to designate Anthropic a supply chain risk.
