Context
Ai2's July 2026 announcement brought olmOCR 2 into its Playground, providing a place to try a model that converts document images into structured text. The model had already been released; this was an additional way to access it.
The underlying task goes beyond recognizing letters. A page image is converted directly into text with document structure, tables and mathematical notation. Its training rewards programmatically check properties such as reading order and faithful equation transcription. Those details matter when extracted text will feed search or analysis: misplaced columns and broken tables can change meaning even when individual words are correct. Model design and training.
