About
Modal is an AI-native cloud platform that provides serverless functions, elastic GPU inference, sandboxes, and multi-node training via a decorator-based Python SDK. It's built for bursty, compute-heavy AI workloads that traditional Kubernetes-based clouds weren't designed for, and is increasingly optimized for AI agents to operate directly.
What it can do
Run Python functions as serverless cloud functions
Python function decorated with Modal SDK decorators → Scaled, on-demand cloud execution results
Perform elastic GPU inference for AI models
Model inference code and input data → Model predictions/inference outputs with auto-scaled GPU compute
Provision sandboxed execution environments for untrusted or agent-generated code
Code to execute (e.g., from an AI agent) → Isolated execution results within a secure sandbox
Run multi-node distributed training jobs
Training script and dataset configuration → Trained model across multiple compute nodes
Auto-scale compute for bursty, high-volume workloads
Workload with variable/spiky demand → Dynamically allocated compute resources that scale up and down
Enable AI agents to programmatically execute compute tasks
Agent-issued compute requests or commands → Executed tasks and returned results to the agent
Why it made the leaderboard
Modal reframes compute infrastructure for agent-driven workloads — decorator-based serverless GPU functions, sandboxes that scale to 100K instances, GPU snapshotting, and a multi-cloud capacity pool — making it a strong fit for bursty, compute-heavy AI and RL workloads that Kubernetes-based clouds handle awkwardly.
