Introducing hybrid compute in Perplexity Computer. Computer can start a task in the cloud, then move to a local model that runs on your Mac. Use it for steps involving private files or sensitive data. Available today in the Perplexity Mac app.

Hybrid compute uses cloud models for search, planning, and reasoning. It orchestrates to a local model on your Mac to handle private files or sensitive information. Computer combines their work into a single output without ever taking sensitive data up to the server.

A privacy gate on your Mac detects PII before it leaves your device. Choose to run that step locally, send the file to the cloud, or skip entirely. We are open-sourcing the classifier today. Read the research: https://t.co/tiIzc85P8O Huggingface: https://t.co/qdRISHcSVt

Hybrid compute is available today for Perplexity Pro, Max, and Enterprise subscribers in the Perplexity Mac app with macOS 15+. Get started: https://t.co/JYAdW5K59d

Context

Perplexity's hybrid compute divides a task in Perplexity Computer, its product, between cloud processing and a model running on the user's Mac. Its announcement assigns search, planning and reasoning to cloud models, while private-file steps can run locally, with Computer coordinating the results into one output. It is available to Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers in the Mac app on macOS 15 or later. Launch thread.

The user can decide how a flagged file is handled. An on-device privacy gate looks for personal information and offers local processing, an explicitly approved upload, or skipping the step. The supplied interface shows a name, an email address and a phone number being flagged before that choice. This makes local processing a decision within a larger workflow that also uses cloud services. Privacy-gate announcement.
